Tethered Cord: Spina bifida is often associated with a tethered spinal cord related to the birth defect. Other symptoms are associated including lower extremity weakness and numbness as well as bladder dysfunction. Sometimes this may be relieved by surgical release of the cord by sectioning the filum terminale. A lumbar MRI scan can answer the question and then referral to a neurosurgeon for evaluation.
