No: It is an excellent aid in the maintenance of your teeth and tissues. Read the directions. Start on low setting and close your lips over the tip or hold head over sink and let water rinse out into sink. Angle the tip downward towards the gums and move as if you were tracing along the edge of the tissue. Then use straight in between the teeth. It will feel very good, once you get the hang of it.

Waterpik: No damage to teeth (they are too hard). If you set the unit on the highest level, the water stream can do more harm than good if positioned directly into the gingival sulcus. Set the power to 60% or 70%, and try to wash away any debris, rather than pushing food and bacteria into the gum tissue. Don't forget to also brush and floss.
