Folate (folic acid): The value you gave depends on how the level was taken. If it is a plasma value it is normal if it is a red cell level it is very low. Folic acid is one of the B vitamins needed to make red cells, white cells and platelets. When the level is low red blood cell maturation is hindered which results in an anemia with large red cells (megaloblastic anemia) as opposed to small cells (iron deficiency)
