Rule out causes: Start by seeing what receives the pain: warm salty water rinse, ice pack, heat, ibuprofen, etc. If it is inflammation, the above should at least receive it. If it is an infection, they won't. If it is viral, you might see sores where the pain is.

See dentist: See your dentist and you may need a referral to a periodontist if needed. Need a full mouth series of radiographs to determine the extent of your periodontal problems and whether they are better treated by your general dentist or a periodontist.

What to do: I am a dentist who has been in practice for over 35 years. The answer to your question is simple: see a dentist who can evaluate your situation with a clinical exam and necessary x-rays. He\she will find out what's wrong and discuss with you how best to treat the problem(s) and prevent future ones.

Gum and/or tooth: Pain in or around the tooth may mean you have either cavity in the tooth, or gum infection around the tooth. If the cavity is small, an emergency filling will help stop the cavity. Your dentist and you may then decide what to do with the tooth for a long-term. If your pain is from gum infection, see your dentist. Simply removing the bacteria will often remove pain. See a dentist soon.

Periodontal care: Seek professional dental care. Pain in the gum tissues may be due to infection and loss of bone support around the teeth. Brushing and flossing are not enough to resolve this type of problem.
