There are actually syndromes that can arise from either duplications or deletions in DNA. The severity of disease depends on the genetic material that's extra or deficient. In Down syndrome, an extra chromosome 21 causes disease. In Turner syndrome, the lack of a second sex chromosome causes the disorder.
