Common mechanism!: Unbeknownst mild trauma can cause or result in a nondisplaced fracture or sprain/bruise of a big toe that strikes a solid (marble) structure. Pain and numbness (from significant swelling that compresses the nerves) yields to pain and bruising if an actual fracture of the bone occurred. The only way to really know for sure is to have a thorough orthopaedic evaluation and obtain X-rays if indicated.
