To what extent is effexor (venlafaxine) (225mg) taken throughout entire pregnancy considered safe?

Largely unknown: Because it is only 27% protein bound, this drug can cross the placental barrier more easily than other antidepressants. No good data on safety during pregnancy.

Most: Psychiatrists and obs prefer alternate anti-depressants, especially during the third trimester. However, effexor, (venlafaxine) like other anti-depressants, are used to treat conditions that themselves often have severe risks. One must be guided by a careful understand of all the risks and benefits.
