A member asked:

Is it likely i will have another baby with the same heart defect?

Possibly: Having heart defects can be genetic. This may not result in same defect each time, but definite increase risk. Other defects are due to exposures (such as infections) during pregnancy and are no more likely to occur in subsequent pregnancies. I recommend genetic counselor to sort this out.

No: The recurrence risk of a normal parent having a second kid with a congenital heart lesion (any type) is about 4%. If mom or dad had one it would double. A repeat of the same defect is rare, but can occur if it is part of an inherited syndrome. A consultation with a geneticist, usually found at a childrens hospital or medical school would help sort this out.
