It is still a period: Any bleeding around the time of your period (whether dark, light, spotting, etc.) is your period. Exercise can decrease the amount of menses that you pass.

Vaginal storage: The vagina is also a "storage facility" for blood or whatever comes in or out. In the case of your period the brown you are seeing is old blood that has accumulated in the vagina during exercise which did not come out until later.
