Hormones: There is a rise in hormones called prostaglandins before and during your period, Prostaglandins help stimulate the uterus to shed its lining. Thus, they can cause menstrual cramps. They can also stimulate bowel contractions (peristalsis) which, in some women, can cause nausea. Menstrual cramps may cause further nausea due to the nervous system's response to pain.
