Tendon vs hematoma : since you've observed it after exercise it could be from your quadriceps tendon perhaps a tear or could be a bleed and a blood clot called a hematoma. None of these are dangerous. This is something you should ice within the first 36 hours and after that use heat. Don't worry...: ...but, you should at least have it evaluated. A "lump" above your knee joint after playing basketball suggests an injury to the joint or the soft tissues around the joint. Possibilities include an effusion, bursitis, Baker's cyst, and many others. BUT, it's not likely something terrible like a tumor since those don't usually pop up in one day. Still, see an orthopaedic surgeon for evaluation.
