No not neccesarily: The pain that starts at the back and goes down to the ankle most likely is due to the nerve irritation. It means that your nerve is pressed, but you may not need a surgery. Surgery is needed if the nerve is trapped or if there is a fracture that needs to be fixed. Most of these cases especially in the young folks get better with conservative treatment. MRI is needed before any decision is made.
