I have been taking diovan (valsartan) for 5+ years with no discernible side effects. but recently developed a painful itchy rash.which has persisted for 3 months.

See a dermatologist: Although Diovan (valsartan) is quite safe medicine to use and he have taken it for more than 5 years, but still a chance of allergy cannot be ruled out. I still think that the rash needs an expert consultation, and may be a biopsy. Sometimes it may be eczema and other time may be more sinister than that. Time to see a dermatologist.
