Family of origin: Did your family of origin have a healthy attitude and or go see physicians regularly? Were you raised in a strict religious community whereby skin exposure was "inappropriate"? Are you frightened about the exam or worried about discomfort? Quality MD's have heard it all, and take the time to provide professional care. If you are sexually active then you need to see a MD for contraception.

Embarrassment: Good question. It's not uncommon for patients to be worried/embarrassed prior to seeing their doc for intimate reasons. The important thing for you to realize is that your doctor is a professional. They are not there to pass judgement, they are going to want to make sure that you are getting the care you need. While it's a big deal for you, it's just all in a days work for your doc. Don't worry.
