Periodontal abcess: Sounds like an abcess of the tissue surrounding the tooth. Gently press on it and see if any exudate is expressed. Clean area as best you can, irrigate the area with salt water (saline). If it doesn't resolve quickly, see your dentist

Rule of thumb: It is prudent that any bleeding, pain, or as in your case swelling, be immediately evaluated. Can't examine you over the computer. Please ask your General Dentist to evaluate. Wouldn't it be worth the cost of an examination to be told that everything is perfectly healthy? And if there is a problem, early intervention provides the most successful treatment.

Hard or soft?: Flaps of skin should be examined to determine the cause. Often a poorly fitting denture or other chronic irritation/oral habit is found to be the cause. Lumps that are soft or painful are often evidence of a problem that needs to be addressed. Hard (bony but skin-covered) lumps are usually harmless and considered a variant of normal. Depending on what you have, schedule an exam or ask @ next one.
