Paronychia: This sounds like a paronychia which is a common infection of the soft tissue that surrounds fingernails and toenails. Since it can abscess, it can be very painful. It is often caused by picking at or trimming the cuticle area. The best treatments include having a doctor clean the abscess drain the pus pocket. Antibiotics help, but it sounds like you may need to have the area drained
