Folliculitis: is bacterial infection of the hair follicle. It is relatively easy to identify if there are pustules (small pimples) with a hair shaft extruding from the middle of each. A herpetic lesion would not look like folliculitis.

Some limitations: Usually the appearance is pretty characteristic so they are probably correct. However, occasionally lesions can be atypical and since you are clearly concerned it would be helpful to do blood testing to confirm that. That would consist of a test now and, if negative, a repeat in 3 months.
