Sharp side pain: is usually due to irritation (small muscle pull or ligament strain) in the chest wall or due to inflammation of the lining of the lung underneath (often after viral infection). Rarely an underlying inflammatory disorder such as lupus is to blame, but would be associated with additional symptoms or problems.

Musculoskeletal Pain: Sharp pains in the sides that come and go quickly are likely due to a sprain or strain of a muscle or rib, especially in someone your age. It could also be due to inflammation of the cartilage called costochondritis. If the pains are worse when taking a deep breath, it could be pleurisy, or inflammation of the lining of the lungs. All are treated with high dose NSAIDS (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc)
