Im an hvac worker. how do i know if walls i have to drill through have asbestos or not? owners usually seem to not know and not really care either

Hard to say: I would look at the age of the house, with older houses being more suspect. However, you never really know. I would use precautions no matter what including an OSHA certified respirator.
