How are ulcer and acid reflux distinguished from each other?

See answer below: An ulcer has to do with erosion of the lining of the stomach, usually from stomach acid, which could result from stress. Acid reflux, however, usually refers to acid from the stomach traveling backwards up into the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth and stomach. Acid reflux may result from a loose valve connecting the esophagus and stomach. Both can cause a bit of discomfort and pain.
