A member asked:

I have a clubbed thumb, i would feel bad if i pass this syndrome on to my children. would it be possible to filter out the defect?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not possible: It is my understanding that clubbed thumb is caused by a recessive gene that may have been passed down hidden for generations until matched by the genes of the other parent, to now manifest. It is not possible at this time to alter the genes in one's eggs or sperm and this gene will be passed on but has less than 25% chance of showing in your children, even if their other parent is a carrier.
