Very uncommon: People with oral herpes have periods when the virus is present without an outbreak, but usually there isn't enough virus to be easily transmitted by casual contact. The risk is very low (but not zero) from saliva on a shared drinking glass or a brief (social) kiss. Most new oral herpes in adults probably is from more intense contact, eg vigorous (sexual) kissing with someone with active cold sore.
