Weight Gain : Hypothyroidism can cause weight gain by slowing the basal metabolic rate. Identifying hypothyroidism early and treating appropriately should avoid any significant effects. Once treated, individuals with hypothyroidism should not gain weight beyond what anyone else would expect. Do not expect dramatic weight loss when the thyroid is corrected, that will still require calorie reduction.
