Meds and GI consult: Heartburn is caused by stomach acid leaking up the esophagus. The stomach is designed to hold acid, the esophagus is NOT. The acid burning the esophagus is why it hurts. This repeated burning can actually cause changes in the esophagus which sometimes can cause a type of cancer. See a gastroenterologist to look at your esophagus to verify the level of damage. Try prilosec and/or tums (calcium carbonate) til then.

What have you done: to improve this? Heartburn options: Elevate head of bed, avoid tight clothes that cinch the abdomen, avoid meals late at night, wait at least 3 hrs after a meal to lie down, eat smaller meals, maintain a healthy body weight, avoid smoking, avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, caffeine & carbonated beverages. Try acupuncture, hypnosis, ginger tea, relaxation exercises. See if specific foods are triggers
