Trivial vs Serious: Usually this is from passing a hard piece of stool or some other trauma. It hurts, and goes away in short order. If this does not stop in a few days or if the stream is hard, or if the bleeding is or becomes very heavy, a physician visit is in order; if you are losing a large amount of blood (more than a pint total), emergency room visit. Good luck.

See doctor: Rectal bleeding is not normal and should always be evaluated. See a colorectal surgeon, who will do a complete evaluatin and examination, and can treat most causes of rectal bleeding.
