Dr. Keshav Narain answered

Specializes in Retinal Surgery

Neuro vs General : A neurophthalmologist has received additional training in neuro-ophthalmology for one to two years. Many general ophthalmologists can conduct neuro-ophthalmic exams since there are very few neuro-opthalmologists. Both receive training for three years in ophthalmology residency after one year of internship. Both are medical doctors as well. Both can do cataract surgery.

Training: Typically an ophthalmologist would have done a ophthalmology residency. Where a neuro ophthalmologist will have completed a fellowship in neuro ophthalmology after the ophthalmology residency. During this fellowship neuro-ophthalmologists have extensive training in diagnosing diseases of the optic nerve and brain that affect vision.
