Which end of gut: Systemic blood vessels and portal vessels anastomosis to each other in certain locations , if there is any block to blood flow to portal system as in cirrhosis , blood backs up as stomach -esophageal area ( esophageal varies ) , lower part of rectum as in hemorrhoids , around belly button .

Location: Both areas represent collateral circulation between the portal system (think guts) and the systemic circulation. Increased flow in these areas leads to enlargement of the veins and the problems listed. Both may be a sign of problem in the portal system, or may be isolated problems. Further history, examination and testing is needed to know more.
