A member asked:

How does codependency contribute to the maintenance of alcoholism?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Enabling: What helps an alcoholic get better is being accountable for the drinking and being accountable to others for their behavior. A co-dependent often will support the alcoholic by "taking care of them" and saving them from having to deal with the natural consequences of their drinking. Al-Anon is an excellent tool in helping the codependent change.
