School & training: Opticians-go to school to learn how to make eyeglasses. Optometrists (od) complete 4 years of college &4 years optometry school to learn to diagnose & treat eye disease. Ophthalmologists (md or do) complete 4 years college, 4 years of medical school, a medical or surgical intership, 3 years of ophthalmology training learn to diagnose, treat & operate on eye disease, plus some do more= fellowship.
