A member asked:

Why do your veins seem to get hard, and start hurting after having an i.v?

Dr. Ted King answered

Phlebitis: Veins don't like needle being stuck into them and they also don't like having fluids and drugs being flushed through them either. Needles, fluids and chemicals can all cause veins to become inflamed, hard, and sore. We call this phlebitis. Usually, phlebitis resolves on its own once the needle is out and the medicine is stopped. Anti-inflammatory meds can usually make it feel better sooner.
