It's definitive: This is a definitive result. You have genital herpes due to HSV2. Assuming a new diagnosis, discuss treatment and prevention with your doctor and your sex partner(s). You don't need a second opinion unless uncertain about your doc's knowledge about herpes. Excellent info on genital herpes is available from CDC (www.cdc.gov/std) and the American Sexual Health Association (www.ashasexualhealth.org).

Unlikely benefit...: An HSV2 outbreak has symptoms and an appearance that Gyns recognize. The culture is usually only done for confirmation of what is seen during the exam. This test doesn't have a lot of false positives because it is really 2 tests in one. The first is for any type of HSV. If this is positive, the reflex test is to identify the type of HSV. Its unlikely that all of these are wrong. Best wishes

Is exposure to HSV2 different than contraction of HSV2? An APRN told me that positive blood tests only confirms exposure to HSV, but not necessarily that you have HSV2. Is this true? She also said only 100% accurate test is culture test of sore/lesio?
