Allergies or virus: The most common cause of runny nose (rhinitis) is allergies. Viral infections is the most common cause of nonallergic rhinitis. Less common causes include vasomotor, hormonal, occupational rhinitis (irritant subtype), gustatory rhinitis, and rhinitis related to use of decongestant nasal sprays or other medications. If you have had this problem for a while you should be evaluated.
