Staring too long?: One may be staring at an object for too long. The human brain and the eyes it is connected to are designed to see "changes". If a person stares at a single point for too long, the same nerve endings in the back of the eyes are seeing the same spot for so long that those nerve endings don't see any "changes". When no visual changes occur, strange things start to happen in the brain's vision center.
