Acid: Suger feeds the bacteria in your mouth "high octane" food which the bacteria digest and then excrete acid as a byproduct. The acid demineralizes your enamel and inflames your gums.

No: Sugar does not ruin your gum, it may become fermented and cause cavity. However, diabetes (rise of glucose level in blood) will exacerbate the destruction of periodontal attachment (gum, bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament) by impairing the regeneration potential and make patient susceptible to infection.
