Depends: If you are not better after 3 days, sometimes the drops can be adding to the problem so you need to see a doc to decide on the next step. A heating pad may help, along with ibuprofen (with food only,and only if you have no nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain or other reasons not to take it - read the label). Bad Otitis externa: First, were antibiotics topical or oral? If Ear canal is so swollen, that doctor is unable to visualize the ear drum, this might be underlying middle ear infection.Oral antibiotics would be indicated for 7-10 days. OR Swelling of the ear+ ear canal is due to allergic reaction to externa otitis or drops being used , then Prednisone( Medrol) would be best treatment. Warm compresses
