R/O HERNIA: A groin lump or mass especially if it enlarges when standing may be a hernia. He needs to be examine and diagnosis confirmed. It can also be a fatty tumor, which is a lipoma . Lastly it can be an enlarged lymph node , which is more worrisome for Lymphoma. The doctor will check labs examine him and do a CT scan of Chest /Abd/Pelvis to confirm. Then surgery is always an option.

Hernia?Lymph Nodes?: Commonest cause of a knot in the groin is from an Inguinal Hernia.That usually can be pushed in by keeping a gentle pressure on the knot/swelling. Other causes are swollen lymph glands He should make an apt with his Primary Care Doctor to find out what this knot is from.It will give you the correct diagnosis and proper tratment if needed
