YES: If it is in the tooth itself, you can get decay (cavity). If in the gum around it , then an infection. See your Dentist for evaluation and referral to the Oral Surgeon if the teeth need to be extracted. Good Luck.

Of course: When wisdom teeth cause problems or food impaction they need to come out. If you are experiencing pain, swollen gums, lymph nodes and it does not go away or if you find it difficult to open your mouth, you should see a dentist for evaluation, x-ray and wisdom teeth removal.

Evaluate by dentist: Have your dentist evaluate the positioning of the wisdom teeth. If they are impacted or semi-impacted, you will be referred to an oral surgeon. At 18 years old, wisdom teeth are eruptiing and the dentist will be able to better evaluate with radiographs and a clinical examination, it might be the normal eruption pattern. Try to clean the area gently with a child size toothbrush.
