Head cold: A viral upper respiratory tract infection typically lasts a week. After that a heavy cough productive of thick, discolored sputum often means that a bacterial bronchitis infection has developed and antibiotics would help to clear it up faster than letting it linger. Fever and chills raise a concern about pneumonia.
