Ovulation: If you have regular 28-day cycles you are probably ovulating! Many women can feel when they are ovulating and generally describe it as a dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen. The ache is transient and usually does not require pain relievers. Some women experience painful ovulation known as "Mittelschmerz" or "middle pain" which occurs midway through the menstrual cycle and can last 2-3 days.

Could be ovulation : What you are desribing sounds like ovulatory pain. Pain around the middle of your menstrual cycle could signify that you are simply ovulating. Unless you're abdominal muscles are sore from coughing, your cough should be unrelated. Motrin and other similar analgesics may be of help. Remember to mark your cycles to see how long they are. Ovulation usually occurs two weeks before your period.
