A member asked:

What is the risk of cancer after unprovoked pulmonary embolism? would you be symptomatic after the discovery of the clot?

No association: pulmonary embolism common especially after surgery and as such anticoagulation and antiembolic stockings employed. If embolus does occur in small vessels, the symptoms are minimum to non. If in large vessels, cardiovascular collapse can occur. Cava unbrellas are used as a preventative with DVT. No cancer association has been noted.

Other way around: Patients who have underlying cancer have a higher risk of developing pulmonary embolism than the normal population. The mechanism is not well understood, but it is thought that certain cancers can lead to a hyper-coagulable state, which increases the risk of pulmonary embolism. This does not mean that people without known cancers who develop pulmonary embolism should be screened for cancer.
