Regular follow up: With regular follow up with your surgeon, wear of the plastic in the knee can be seen. When the wear is bad enough, the plastic can be changed out (tire change). If you wait until there is pain, then one of the metal parts might be loose, requiring a more involved replacement surgery (tire and wheel replacement, and some time realignment too).
