Anti-inflammatories: Assuming you are otherwise healthy and that your pain is related to the resp infxn, anti-inflammatories should be sufficient. You may need to try increasing the dose -- Ibuprofen you can take up to 800mg (4 over-the-counter tablets) three times a day, or try using aleve (naproxen) which is a bit more powerful. Either one, take with food to protect your stomach.

Go see your doctor: Where is your pain from your viral respiratory illness? Ibuprofen comes in various dose strengths from 200mg up to 800mg. There are many alternative nsaids. Naproxen is available w/o prescription. Acetaminophen is good if you have a healthy liver. Tramadol is another unscheduled option. Then you venture into narcotic/opioid territory. But that seems overkill for URI so go tell you doc about pain.
