Depression : Hypersomnia is one of the telltale signs of depression. I would suggest finding a reputable psychotherapist in your area and see if you can get him to go and speak about feelings of depression and not wanting to be around other people. It sounds as though he is stagnating in his life and has a mixture of feelings about that, up to and including shame, depression, and rage.

See a doctor : This can be a symptom of Depression. However, other medical conditions need to be excluded. He will need to see his doctor for a history, physical exam, and possibly lab tests. The differential diagnosis is quite broad and more information is needed to pinpoint what is wrong. I recommend that he see his doctor so that a plan of care can be implemented in the hope of an improved quality of life.
