Weight lifting: Power lifting is the type of exercise that can cause sudden dramatic elevation of blood pressure . ideally a hypertensive patient should do aerobic exercise (running , biking etc)

In the short run: You blood pressure can spike with very heavy lifts. So if you have poorly controlled hypertension, you need to be careful about heavy resistance training. But in the long run, resistance training can actually help reduce your blood pressure as part of regular exercise regimen.
