The swelling, edema: in medical terms, is additional extracellular water retained in the tissues. Lots of water intake without matching output will ↑ the edema. Due to gravity, edema nearly always greatest in portions of body lowest for hours at a time & shifts with prolonged changes in body position. Edema ↑es with ↓ed albumen, ↑ed capillary leakage & ↑ed venous pressures due to whatever combination of causes.
