Time: All the medications that have been put forward to target cold viruses (not influenza) have not surprisingly proved lame and worse than the disease. Best rx's is Pseudoephedrine used judiciously and briefly, something like iboprofen for pain, and plenty of water to keep the pain meds from slowing down kidney function and keeping the chest secretions moist and flowing.

You can't: You can't. It has to go away on it's own. You can take medication to reduce the symptoms. Resting may help speed up recovery.

Will take its course: Common cold is caused by a virus and there is no antibiotic used to treat it. It is self limiting and usually one gets better within 5 to7 days. But you can take some symptomatic meds like decogestants with or without cough medicine if you need relief for cough and Tylenol or Ibuprofen for aches or fever. And drink plenty fluids and refrain from smoking

It takes time: The standard recommendation is lots of rest and hydration, and take anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen if needed for fever and muscle aches, etc. Warm lemon water with honey can help with cough, and a hot shower or nasal saline can help with sinus congestion. Salt water gurgle can help with sore throat. There is no magic bullet. Your body will get rid of the cold naturally.

Chill! (Rest!): Person asks, What should I do to get rid of my cold? Most Colds go by themselves provided one's immunity is not compromised. Grandma's wisdom is still relevant: Chill! (Rest!), Stay warm & Cozy, Drink plenty of Fluids especially warm ones. Take OTC Fever medicine/ decongestants if needed, go to bed early and call the Doctor if the symptoms still linger on a few days later.

Chronic Cold: How old are you, what is your gender, for how long you had the symptoms? All this is basic to know. What color are the secretions? do you have fever, how high? do you feel sick? are the sinuses blocked? is the chest mid-line hurting? Have you taken antibiotics? Did they helped, obviously not much. You need a chest X ray, culture of secretions, cytology, you need a pulmonologist.
