A side stitch: I mostly get this if I run too soon after eating. Another cause could be shallow breathing. If you are just now trying to get back in shape after not being very active, this usually gets better over time if you keep at it! If it's really severe, and only gets worse as times goes on I would see a physician about it.

Several things: Start with gentle but regular aerobic exercise (walking, cycling, water exercise). Build up core strength (tummy and back muscles). Eliminate tobacco use. If such simple measures have been ineffective, consult your primary doctor or a spine physician.
