Common issue: HPV is a family of viruses, some of which infect the genital tract. In the pre-vaccine era 60-70% of college age women were found serum positive for genital strains. Only a few strains have symptoms (warts) most do not. Their link to cervical cancer is why pap smears are routine. Once acquired, it can be dormant forever.Rare transfer of the wart stains can occur during childbirth.
