What is the criteria of time for hiv testing?

HIV: If using antibody tests it generally will take at least 2 wks to become positive, and in some instances can take up to 3 to 6 mos. If testing for HIV RNA by PCR ($$$) this may become positive earlier. If the exposure has been substantial you may want to be tested several times.

HIV testing...: Negative testing 6 months from exposure is highly accurate and no further testing is needed as long as there have not been other risky sexual encounters since that time. You can be confident that testing 6 months after exposure to the virus provides highly accurate results. In future avoid high risk sexual encounters, use protection, and get regular screening for HIV/STDs if remain sexually active
