Guaifenesin: is an excellent expectorant, meaning that it helps thin and loosen mucous and helps your body get rid of it. Guaifenesin is available in over-the-counter, under a number of different brand names including Robitussin and Mucinex, but you can probably get it cheaper by shopping for generic forms. I recommend 400 mg 3 times/day or 600 mg extended release twice a day. Get plain guaifenesin.
